Responding to a Roof Leak: Immediate Actions
How to manage a roof leak effectively to minimize interior damage before the professionals arrive.
Contain the Water
The moment you spot a leak, your primary goal is to protect the interior of your home. Place a bucket, trash can, or large pot directly under the drip. If water is pooling on the ceiling and forming a bulge, place a bucket underneath and carefully poke a small hole in the center of the bulge with a screwdriver to let the water drain controlled, preventing a larger ceiling collapse.
Protect Your Belongings
Move furniture, rugs, and electronics out of the way. If items are too heavy to move, cover them with plastic sheeting or tarps.
Do Not Go on the Roof
It is incredibly dangerous to go onto a wet, leaking roof. You risk slipping, falling, or causing more damage to the compromised area. Leave the actual roof repair to professionals.
Call for Professional Help
A leak means the roofing system has been compromised. Contact a dependable local contractor to find the source. Water can travel along trusses and beams, meaning the actual hole in the roof might be far from where the drip is appearing inside.
