What hail damage looks like on asphalt shingles

Hail damage is often hard to see from the driveway. On an asphalt shingle roof, these are the signs we look for up close:

• Bruising: a soft spot where the hailstone hit. Press it and the shingle gives, like a bruise on fruit. The surface may look fine, but the mat underneath has been crushed.
• Granule loss: dark, round spots where the protective granules were knocked off, and extra granules collecting in gutters or at the bottom of downspouts. Without granules, the asphalt is exposed to sun and wears faster.
• Cracked or fractured mats: hits hard enough to crack the shingle, sometimes in a circular or star pattern. Cracks let water reach the deck over time.
• Dented metal: dents on roof vents, ridge vents, flashing, gutters, downspouts and window wraps. Metal shows hail clearly, so it helps confirm the size and direction of a storm.
• Torn or lifted edges: when hail comes with strong wind, shingle edges can crack, curl or lift.

Some marks are not hail at all, like normal aging, blistering or foot traffic. Part of a good inspection is telling the difference and showing you the photos.

What size hail damages a roof?

As general guidance, this is what different hail sizes can do to asphalt shingles:

• About 1 inch (quarter size): damage to asphalt shingles can begin, especially on older or worn roofs. Gutters, screens and soft metal can dent from smaller hail.
• About 1.75 inches (golf ball size): hail can dent, bruise and crack shingles. When that damage is spread across a slope, a replacement often makes more sense than spot repairs.
• 2 inches or more: impacts can crack or break shingles and damage vents, flashing and other roof components.

Wind, the angle of the storm and the age of the roof all matter, so size alone does not answer the question. An inspection does.

How to check for hail damage from the ground, safely

Do not climb on the roof or lean a ladder against wet gutters. You can learn a lot from the yard:

• Walk around the house and look at gutters, downspouts and window screens for dents or splits.
• Check the bottom of each downspout for piles of shingle granules that look like coarse sand.
• Look at roof vents, the ridge and any metal flashing you can see. Dents there usually mean the shingles were hit too.
• Check siding, window wraps, the AC unit, the mailbox and the deck for fresh marks.
• Use your phone's zoom from the ground to photograph each side of the roof, and write down the storm date.
• After the next rain, look at ceilings and the attic, if you can reach it safely, for new stains.

What to do after a hailstorm, in order

1. Stay off the roof. Look from the ground and stay safe.
2. Take photos of anything you can see: dented gutters, downspouts, window screens, siding, the car, and any hailstones next to a coin or ruler. Write down the date of the storm.
3. Protect the inside. If water is coming in, move belongings, put down a bucket and photograph the leak.
4. Get a free roof inspection before you sign anything. We check the roof, gutters, vents and siding and give you a photo report.
5. Call your insurance company if the inspection shows storm damage. Many policies require you to file within one year of the storm; check your policy.
6. Do not sign with door-to-door crews before an inspection. Take your time, ask for photos of the damage, and choose a local contractor you can call back.

Wind damage roof repair in Omaha

Strong wind causes a different kind of damage than hail. We look for missing or creased shingles, lifted tabs that no longer seal, exposed nails, loose ridge caps, bent flashing and gutters pulled away from the fascia. A few missing shingles can often be repaired. Widespread creasing or many lifted shingles across a slope may point to a replacement.
